PlayalongToys Armies of Middle Earth

PlayAlongToys had the license to manufacture a "three inch" series of action figures. While called 3", the figures were, of course, actually made in proportion to the character's size. Called the Armies of Middle Earth series, they are more conveniently referred to by collectors as AOME.

Although some figures were sold individually (primarily as premiums to people who preordered DVDs), most were sold in sets of horse and rider or three figures, but there were some very elaborate battle sets, too. Don't be fooled by the small size. The costumes and weapons on the AOME figures were often more highly detailed than the "body scan" figures in the larger ToyBiz lines. These were a premium product sold at a very reasonable price. You could usually purchase a 3-pack of AOME figures for $9.99. As with Toybiz, some figures were harder to find than others.

Stern Pinball Machines created a fantastic and limited edition Lord of the Rings pinball machine, complete with highly detailed character figure. When I ordered some of these figures at an electronic gaming dealer, I was astonished to find that Stern had mostly used standard AOME figures in their pinball machines.
