These beautiful blank CD kits were licensed, but the license was revoked, and the company subsequently went belly up.
I spoke with one of the company officers, who was very bitter. He said New LIne revoked the license for fear that people would mistake the licensed burnables as implied permission to download bootleg copies of the movies off the internet.
Anyway, that's what I was told.
There were sets made only for FOTR and TTT. Every angle, corner, and surface of these is heavily decorated.
The CDroms even line up in order so there is a face on the open side of the package.
The CDroms themselves (ten per set) have different art on each CD.

I included a bunch of photos here for people to enjoy, because few collectors, if any, have had a chance to see one of these.
My copy was part of a Wellington premiere press kit I obtained from a journalist.
It included a backpack, shirt, hat, multiple press CDroms, press pass, and several audio CDs of hours worth of private interviews he conducted with all principal actors and crew.
This is the singlemost expensive item I have purchased for my collection, but well worth the expense, considering the quality of items that were included.

FNAC seems to be the French equivalent of MediaPlay. They sell books, DVDs, music, phones, etc.
Peter Jackson apparently gave a 2 hour talk to attendees at some kind of event at FNAC in December 2002.
This appears to be a licensed recording of this session.
Or maybe not. No parlais Francais.
