ToyBiz Action Figures

Toybiz produced a series of 6" action figures that was unique for the time, because they were the first toy company to use digital body scans of the actors to create their figures. As a result, many of the faces on the Toybiz figures are quite good. Others,.........not so much. As with the AOME figures, smaller and larger characters were created in scale.

Figures retailed at retailers like Target, WalMart, Kaybee Toys, and Toys'r Us, and generally sold in the $7.99 to $9.99 range for singles, and $19.99 for special packs. Toybiz was notorious for intentionally selling certain figures in short supply, creating enormous demand, and guaranteeing that hardcore collectors had to "make the rounds" weekly to avoid missing any. Greasing the palm of a pimply faced stockboy was not unheard of, and stories abounded of stockboys going into business for themselves, selling the most desirable figures right out of the stockroom and straight onto eBay.

On the other hand, outlet stores were filled for months after movie releases with scores of unwanted wall-climbinb Gollum figures, which didn't move, even when marked down to a couple of dollars. Perhaps a little more "balance" would have resulted in better profit numbers, and happier collectors.

Toybiz followed the licensing package color "guidelines", i.e. green for FOTR, dark red for TTT, and blue for ROTK. The curved boxes are often referred to as Moon or Half Moon boxes, because of a frequent seller on Ebay who used to describe his Toybiz wares as Moon boxes. Many collectors picked up the habit.

This is a pretty representative collection, but does not include any of the manufacturing errors or variants, which are sought after in some collecting circles.

Cave Troll Original green figure is HTF in mint condition, as the rubbery jowls were often torn off by people "trying" him on the shelf once too often. They also had a tendency to deterioriate and fall off even in the hands of careful collectors.
