Japan Poster Box Collection
Poster Box Collection
19 Dec 2007
This is a set of unusual "Poster Boxes" from a Japanese publishing house.

There is one Poster Box for each movie in the trilogy.
Each oversized Poster Box has an exterior box, which acts as a slipcover for that particular set,

and an inner box, which acts as a binder for the contents.

Inside the binder is mounted a pad of oversized movie posters. Most are the familiar movie images, but there's a couple of particularly nice ones, including a very detailed plains view of Osgiliath with a glowering Mordor towering overhead (which, unfortunately I can't get a good photo of. Sorry!) I think the Bag End poster is the prettiest one I've seen. Great colors on it and good quality printing.

There are approximately a dozen posters inside each box. The first poster inside each is a map of Middle Earth. The poster is in a slightly different color scheme for each movie. In this photo the tabs on the upper end seal the box shut when it's folded over, and the bottom end is the binding on the pad.

The posters are nicely divided between landscape and portrait format.

Retail on the boxes was 2800 Yen, which is roughly $28.00 US.
I am not familiar with the posterboxes. Because there is a price on them, I am assuming they were not a promo item, and were available for sale, but don't know where. I follow the Japanese collectibles pretty close, and have not seen these before. They are not pictured in the theatre catalogues, either.

I am guessing that this set is either a prototype (doubtful), or was extremely limited (more likely).
In any event, every available surface is covered in either movie photography, or graphic culture art. This set is unique because there is graphic art on it I haven't seen anywhere else, including a wonderful Tree of Gondor in full bloom.

Even the back of each poster has a nice logo, complete with a culture design. This is the only place I've ever seen LOTR posters logo'd on the back.

The final page of the pad of tear-off posters is a credit page. Each set has a unique credit page, with a fabulous scrolling, vining design on it. Daniel Reeve should seriously consider trying his hand at wallpaper design. I would happily hang some of these designs in my home.

The back of each box also has a unique repeat graphic design.

To top it all off, there is a set of four promo or postcards, one for each movie, each with a beautiful graphic design, and a fourth "overall" card with the usual map art. (I don't think it's a trilogy card.) I don't know where or how the promo cards were distributed.

All in all this is a beautiful set. Just fantastic attention to detail, lavishly made.
I feel very privileged to have found this set!
