Germany: Kinder Candy
The German candy company, Kinder (meaning child) had an extensive license for all three Lord of the Rings movies, producing several different series of promotions. While chocolate wafers came with a series of very nice stickers, by far the most popular were the Kinderegg figure series.
Kindereggs are hollow, foil wrapped chocolate eggs. Inside each specially marked egg was a yellow capsule, inside of which was a randomly inserted movie figure, in pieces. When assembled, figures ranged from about an inch to two inches tall, although the elaborate Treebeard and Shadowfax figures were several inches tall. One version of Saruman came with a Palantir that actually lit up.
Figures came with a tiny, full colour "BPZ", a small paper which described the character and gave instructions to put the figure together. The tiny figures were detailed enough that I ran into several costumers who got ahold of the figures to help model their costumes.
I spent a very happy afternoon at RingCon, munching my way through a pile of Kindereggs, courtesy of my roommate. Not only were the figures a blast, but the chocolate is excellent.
There is so much Kinder material, that I have divided it all down by movie. This page also includes Kinder material from Brazil, France, and Japan. Although not available (and thus not well known) in the USA, Kinder products are widely available worldwide, and the company has brand recognition and as positive a "feel good" reputation as our own Coca-Cola.
Kinder items are widely collected as their own separate discipline, making some items quite sought after.
