Postcards

It's possible to make a satisfying collection of nothing but

Lord of the Rings postcards.

This page includes over 450 postcards from around the world.  Some of the series were just  too large to post on this page, so please be sure not to overlook the links to the Czech Republic, France Sonic, Japan, Poland Passion, GB Posters, and USA Import Images.

Cards are in alphabetical order by country of publication.

Konka

Konka is a manufacturer of computer peripherals, such as monitors.

this licensed set of 7 is one of the few licensed Chinese items I've been able to find.

The set of 7 came in a special envelope (see final picture).

The cards are unusually glossy.

Eagle's

Rare set of 5  postcards

I think Eagle's is a brand of tea. There is a photo of a box of Eagle's and a steaming cup of tea on the back of each postcard.

Chromos

I have no idea what Chromos was. There is no licensing info on the back of these postcards, but they do appear licensed.

I can't think of any fakes that came from France, and there is a postcard of Arwen in a dress that doesn't appear in the movies.

The back of each card is numbered.

One has number "36", so this may have been a fairly extensive series.

They aren't perforated, so don't seem to come from a postcard book.

ONE magazine

ONE magazine is a fabulous French magazine. Each issue is devoted to a single movie, and includes posters, postcards, perforated character cards, and complete articles and coverage.

They devoted several issues to the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

This is just a selection of postcards from some of the magazines.

djuice

I'm not sure what djuice was.  There is a djuice that is a Pakistani telecommunications company, but this card is definitely not Pakistani.

 Hungary

Published by Hungary-Egmont postcard book.

Book is full of perforated, punch out postcards.

These are just a few samples.

 Italy

ToCard

seem to be free postcards similar to Boomerang.

This is one of my favorite sets of postcards. I like the style. They have a medieval feel, and are distinctly Italian.

A complete oddity. Appears licensed, is from Thailand, but reverse side is printed in Swedish.

the Royal Mail

the Royal Mail did a huge LOTR promotion, including a cash scratch-off promotion. They also retailed the Gemma greeting cards.

Some Royal Mail materials were also distributed in Welsh. I don't think the postcard was, but would love to lay hands on a copy if it was.

USA

Book cover postcards. These were distributed at Barnes & Noble.

USA

C&D Visionary

American licensee for postcards, decals, stickers, buttons, incense, and air fresheners.

These guys picked the most singularly bland images they possibly could.

Can't really expect more from a company who's product  line tends towards "head shop" chic and Hot Topic. Yes, these were the cards your local teen elf fancier could buy , along with various piercing implements.

If you look closely, you'll note that Aragorn never appears on the Pelennor Fields with the Rhorrim army. This is an error. Looks good, though.

USA

Decipher

(gaming card company)

Now, on the other hand, the trading card publisher & distributor Decipher had access to fabulous pictures, and used them.

I particularly like the Warg Rider, and the hands of Sauron. What a great picture!!!!!
